“As much as 40 MLD of treated water will be supplied to the industries in Sirperumpudur, Oragadam and other places from the Koyambedu TTRO plant. Wastewater treated using TTRO can even be used for drinking,” Palaniswami said while inaugurating the plant. As a part of the project, Chennai Metrowater Water Supply and Sewage Board (Metrowater) had created a pipeline for 39.22 kilometres from Koyambedu to Irungattukotai. Pipelines for 12.20 kilometres and 8 kilometres have been laid to Sriperumpudur and Oragadam from the plant. As many as 591 industrial units, including the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, will utilise the treated water for industrial use. The water manager would also earn Rs 29.25 lakh every day from supplying treated water to the industries.

“As industries use treated water, the city will not have to face water shortage even if monsoon fails,” the CM said. Metro Water plans recycle around 20 per cent of total sewage water generated in the city every day. Kodungaiyur TTRO plant also processes 45 MLD of sewage. Speaking at the event, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said that before the two TTRO plants were set up, Metro Water was supplying only 36 MLD of treated water to the industries.

A Metrowater official said that the TTRO treated water is pure as its total dissolved solids (TDS) is only 70 units while water up to 500 units is considered fit for drinking.
