Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after reigning for 70 years. She was 96.

CHENNAI: Veteran poet and lyricist Vairamuthu expressed his condolences on the demise of Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday.

Taking to Twitter he tweeted, "The first Queen to rule for over 70 years. The first monarch who officialised 17 Prime Ministers. The first royal woman to assume duties in the armed services. My palm will never forget the moment it shook hands with you. Your name and fame will sail on the shoulders of time." (sic)

On Saturday, the new Monarch of the UK Charles III paid tribute to his "darling mama" and called her an inspiration in his first address to the nation as king and vowed 'lifelong service' to the people. Recalling Queen Elizabeth's commitment, which she made in 1947, King Charles III said that it defined her whole life.
