Man stabs sister to death for hiding liquor bottle

A 60-year-old woman was murdered by her brother under the influence of alcohol in Valasaravakkam on Friday night. Police have arrested the suspect.

The deceased, R Tharageshwari, a widow hailing from Sri Lanka, was staying at a rented premises at Velan Nagar with her mother S Vedanayaki (81) and son R Athishan, who is employed at a photo studio in the neighbourhood, said police.


The accused, Guha Dasan (50), reached the city from Sri Lanka only 10 days ago to go to Sabarimala. After returning from the pilgrimage, Guha Dasan consumed liquor on Friday night and got into an argument with Tharageshwari as she allegedly hid a liquor bottle. In the melee, Guha Dasan stabbed Tharageshwari with a kitchen knife multiple times. Athishan tried to rescue his mother, but also received a stab in his right chest. The victim’s mother, Vedanayaki, also suffered a hip fracture as Guha Dasan pushed her during the fight.


After Tharageshwari collapsed on the spot, neighbours rushed her to the hospital, but she was declared brought dead. On information, Valasaravakkam police secured Guha Dasan from the house and booked him under murder charges. The police said that Guha Dasan became addicted to alcohol after he was divorced twice. He was remanded in judicial custody on Saturday.
