The police arrested the woman’s husband Thasaradan (30), and his friends Kannairam (24), Deva (30), Karthikeyan (32) and Kanniyapa (34) from Uthiramerur.

The deceased, Madan (26) from Uthiramerur, was working as a driver at a private firm in Maraimalainagar. He was also related to Thasaradan, his lover’s husband.

Sources said that Thasaradan and Ashwini fell in love during their college days but their parents did not accept their relationship as they were from different castes. But the families were forced to accept their marriage after they attempted suicide seven years ago.

Recently, Thasaradan came to know that his wife was having an affair with Madan and he warned them to end their relationship.

About two months ago, both Madan and Ashwini went missing and Thasaradan filed a complaint at the Uthiramerur police station. Ashwini went to the Melmaruvathur all-women police station and said that she was not kidnapped and added that she did not want to live with Thasaradan anymore. Since then, Ashwini has been staying with her parents in Maduranthagam.

Thasaradan felt Madan was the reason for the estrangement and decided to kill him. On Wednesday, Madan visited his hometown ahead of Pongal. At night, as he was chatting with his friends near the old theatre on East Kamala Street, five men surrounded and hacked him to death. The group escaped from the spot after confirming that he was dead. The Uthiramerur police, who rushed to the spot, retrieved the body and sent it to Chengalpattu government hospital for post-mortem examination.

During the investigation, the police found that it was Thasaradan and his friends who killed Madan. On Thursday morning, all five of them were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
