The accused, identified as Abdul Basheer, is said to be working with the victim’s father as a house painter. The incident happened in the wee hours of Wednesday when he visited the victim’s house. When the 16-year-old girl resisted him, he allegedly slapped her and fled the spot.

Dejected over the incident, the girl consumed varnish kept in the house in an attempt to take her life. Her neighbour, who found her lying unconscious, rushed her to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment.

On information, the Secretariat Colony police inquired her and based on her statement, the police registered a case and arrested Abdul Basheer. He was remanded under Pocso Act on Wednesday after investigation.
