Madurai man held with 5 kg ganja in Chennai

CHENNAI: City Police on Sunday arrested a 28-year-old man for alleged possession of 5 kg of ganja, near Perambur railway station, meant for distribution to peddlers.

The arrested person was identified as A Kalyanasundaram of Alavandhan, Madurai.

Otteri police had received a tip off about ganja being smuggled into the city and increased vigil near Perambur railway station.

The accused was intercepted near an autorickshaw stand on suspicion and was questioned about the items in the bag he was carrying.

Since he gave contradictory answers, he was detained and on perusing his bag, police found a parcel with 5 kg of ganja in it, after which he was arrested.

Investigation revealed that Kalayanasundaram had sourced ganja from Andhra Pradesh and smuggled it through train. He was on his way to his hideout near Perambur when he got caught.

Police said that the arrested person already has three cases against him in police stations in chennai for ganja possession and also had five waylaying cases in police stations in Madurai and Dindigul districts.

He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
