CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Saturday (August 22) launched a 40-day door-to-door campaign, ‘Kuppai Pirippom – Naalai Kappom’ (Segregate Waste – Save Tomorrow), across South Chennai to promote source segregation at home and improve solid waste management.
The campaign covers Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones and aims to reach 50,000 households.
The initiative follows Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s directions to ensure waste was segregated at source into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary and hazardous categories for efficient collection and disposal.
On the first day, Corporation workers and outreach teams visited 1,000 residences in each zone, reaching 5,000 homes. They distributed information flyers, put up awareness posters and provided dedicated bags for collecting non-biodegradable waste.
The awareness teams, along with Urbaser Sumeet personnel, will make regular door-to-door visits during the 40-day drive to monitor participation and reinforce segregation practices.
The campaign follows a four-stage approach of creating awareness, encouraging immediate action, developing daily segregation habits and sustaining the practice over the long term.
The GCC will assess household participation, collection efficiency and the quality of segregation at the end of the campaign. Based on the results, it plans to expand the initiative to the remaining 45,000 households in phases.
The campaign was attended by Maduravoyal MLA Revanth Charan, Alandur MLA Harish and Sholinganallur MLA ECRP Saravanan. Valasaravakkam zonal committee chairperson Nolambur V Rajan, councillors, zonal officers and officials from the Chennai Corporation and Urbaser Sumeet also participated.
