Police said that the incident took place on Saturday night, when victims Chandru Ramanan (28) of Nungambakkam and his friend Akshara Nair, were returning home after dinner at a private hotel in Adayar. While they were on their way, the two were stopped by a man, Jamal, who introduced himself as a police officer. He is said to have forced himself into the car and threatened to file a case under prostitution charges.

When Chandru resisted, Jamal allegedly told him that he would defame the girl’s name and even tried to molest her. He hit Chandru when he tried to stop him and later demanded Rs 5,000 to let them go. Chandru, who told Jamal that he didn’t have money, asked him to come in the car to an ATM.

When he drove the car on Anna Salai, he spotted a police patrol vehicle. He stopped the car and stepped out to complain. On seeing this, Jamal  got out of the car and tried to escape. However,  the police chased and caught him. Police said that Jamal was a repeat offender from Washermanpet and has a couple of cases pending against him. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
