Gold, laptops seized at airport, three detained

Customs officers seized gold and laptops worth Rs 50 lakh, and detained three persons at Chennai airport on Wednesday.

When the officers were checking passengers who arrived from Kuala Lumpur, they intercepted Sirajudeen (45) of Nagapattinam and Sathick Ali (48) of Ramanathapuram on suspicion. During a personal search, the officers found that they had concealed gold in their rectum. On extraction, gold weighing 689 grams worth Rs 27 lakh was seized. Further, their baggage was also checked and 57 old and refurbished laptops worth Rs 3 lakh were seized. Both were detained.


In another incident, Ajmanthkhan (30) of Tiruchy, who arrived from Dubai, was found to have concealed 460 grams of gold inside his rectum. A gold cut bit, weighing about 48 grams, was also found in his pant pocket. Totally, gold weighing 508 grams worth Rs 20 lakh was seized. He was detained for further inquiry.
