Gang ransacks supermarket, flees with 53,000 in cash

Police have launched a hunt for a gang of 15 men who barged into a supermarket in Anna Nagar and attacked two employees, damaged the premises and robbed Rs 53,000 on Sunday afternoon.

Around 2.30 pm, a man entered the supermarket on 18th Main Road in Anna Nagar and picked up an argument with a 19-year-old woman staffer. When he pulled the girl by her hand, the shop owner S Senthil Murugan sent his supervisor to rescue the girl and sent the person out. Police said the woman employee was in a relation with Saravanan, which she snapped.


Later, around 15 men accompanied by the main suspect, identified as Saravanan, reached the shop and broke the CCTV cameras at the entrance of the shop.


They barged inside and damaged three other CCTV cameras and started attacking the supervisors, Karthikaselvan and Senthil. As there were only 10 staff members at the shop, they could not do much except defending themselves while the gang took away Rs 53,000 in cash fled the premises.


Senthil Murugan lodged a complaint at Tirumangalam police station and a case has been registered. Karthikaselvan, who sustained severe injures on his spine in the attack, is undergoing treatment.
