Based on a tip-off, organised crime unit inspector RV Jayanthi and her team tightened vigilance at Egmore station. They spotted a four-member gang that got down from a train coming from Andhra Pradesh and exiting the station in a suspicious way.

They were intercepted when they boarded an autorickshaw to CMBT, Koyambedu, and the package in their possession was searched.

The police found out that it was ganja leaves packed in 22 parcels, each weighing about 2 kg. The contraband was seized and all four were detained.

Interrogation revealed that they used to buy ganja from Andhra Pradesh and smuggle it to Theni and Tiruchy by train and bus. The accused were identified as V Fathima Saleem (66) of Tiruchy, V Ganesan (42) of Uthamapalayam, and S Sasikala (38) and K Pandiswari (35) of Theni. All four were remanded in judicialcustody on Monday. Further investigation is on.
