FB friend held for cheating woman

City police arrested a man for allegedly cheating a woman after befriending her through social media platform Facebook by promising to marry her. The accused, a 40-year-old man, has not only promised to marry the woman, but also cheated her after collecting Rs 1.05 lakh and a laptop.

Police said, the woman, a resident of St Mary’s Road in Mandaveli, works as a physiotherapist. She has been separated from her husband.


The accused, Jayachandran, had befriended her through the social networking site a few months ago.


Jayachandran, who worked in private firm, too, was living separately from his wife. After becoming friends through the FB, both fell in love.


“However, two months ago, citing a loss in the business, he sought help from the woman who gave him Rs 1.05 lakh cash, her diamond earrings and laptop,” police said.


After getting the cash and valuables, he stopped contacting the woman and his phone was switched off since then.


He not only refused to marry her, but also threatened her.


Realising she was cheated, she lodged a complaint and the Mylapore all-women police station.


During the inquiry, police found that Jayachandran had collected cash and valuabes as stated in the complaint. Following this, police arrested Jayachandran, a resident of Minjur.
