CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) said that fatalities on city roads have come down by 10 per cent in 2025 up to December 25, in comparison to the same period the previous year, owing to the various measures undertaken by the city police.
According to the city police, 469 fatalities were recorded on city roads this year (until December 15). In 2024, the number of fatal accidents in the same time period was 519.
"Also, a significant reduction of 66% has been achieved in grievous hurt cases in road accidents this year when compared to last year. In 2024, the number of grievously hurt cases was 2,093, while this year, the number has come down to 721," stated an official release from the city police.
GCTP said that they have undertaken various steps and remedial measures to reduce road accidents and enhance road safety across the city through increased enforcement, patrolling, and awareness activities.
Impactful awareness campaigns were created among road users to maintain road discipline and use protective gear.
"In coordination with the experts, GCTP has facilitated many training programmes for police personnel towards technological approaches for accident reductions and through workshops and safety education programs for schoolchildren, bus drivers, and delivery agents, among others," the release added.
In addition to awareness campaigns, GCTP has strengthened its enforcement strategy by booking a larger number of cases against speeding, drunken driving, speeding and riding without a helmet through manual checks and technological initiatives like ANPR cameras, 2D - Speed Radar System and Vehicle Interceptor System throughout Chennai City.
Furthermore, GCTP also coordinates with other departments to improve road conditions, signage, and lighting at the identified hotspots and accident zones, it said, adding that GCTP will continue its efforts to reduce accidents and ensure road safety as its maximum priority.
