COVID care centre opened on Puzhal prison premises

To support the prison department’s fight to curb the spread of coronavirus among inmates, Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar along with Law, Courts and Prison Minister C Ve Shanmugam inaugurated an exclusive COVID care centre at the Puzhal central prison on Saturday.

The centre has four wards, three for men and one for women. There are 50 beds, and healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, have been deployed at the centre in three shifts to provide medical services round-the-clock. The centre would be monitored by the healthcare staff from Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, Greater Chennai Corporation, and workers and volunteers from Tiruvallur district administration. Stanley Hospital Dean Dr P Balaji had proposed starting a COVID care centre near the Puzhal prison campus.

 The centre would provide treatment to asymptomatic patients and those with mild symptoms of COVID-19. It is also equipped with oxygen cylinders, ECG and X-ray machines, and ambulance roundtheclock. However, inmates with severe symptoms who require intensive care would be sent to Stanley Hospital.
