N Lakshmipathy (58) and his wife Dhanalakshmi (50) of Nacharamal Lane in Pulianthope own a few houses in the city and had rented them out. That was their source of income, the police said.

Since the couple did not have any children, they adopted a boy 16 years ago. But Santhanakrishnan died in a road accident in January 2019 at Otteri.

The couple who were unable to overcome the loss of their son decided to end their lives.

After performing the annual ritual on Santhanakrishnan’s first death anniversary with their relatives in their house on Sunday, they consumed several pills meant for diabetes.

When they were not seen outside the house for a long time on Monday, neighbours broke open the door and found them lying unconscious. They were rushed to Government Stanley Hospital in a 108 ambulance, where they remain critical.

A magistrate visited the hospital on Monday and recorded their statement.

The Pulianthope police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
