According to a Corporation official, the shops were continuing to function without trade license even after the civic body issued lock and seal notices to the shop owners.

“Apart from this, we also had sealed as many as 14 shops functioning in Chennai Corporation shopping complex for failing to pay the rent,” the official said. The official added that the shops that were functioning in the commercial complex in Guruvappan Street owed the civic body around Rs 45 lakh.

Another official said that the civic body was identifying shops functioning without trade licenses across the city and issuing notices to shop owners. As per the data, the officials have sealed more than 500 shops from January. “In January alone, we have sealed close to 300 shops,” the official added.

On February 7, the Chennai Corporation had sealed three shops in Teynampet zone.

As per the civic body estimation, there are more than two lakh shops in the city, but only 75,000 of them are functioning with valid trade licence.
