It all started in the afternoon when a group of students boarded the bus when it halted near EVR Periyar Road around 2 pm on Friday. Around 20 other students followed the bus on motorcycles.

Police said that the students, who belonged to Pachaiyappa’s college and C Kandaswami Naidu College for Men, had literally hijacked the bus after threatening the crew. “The students first asked the passengers to get off.

The students also warned the driver to not halt at any bus stop and not to take any commuters,” police said. Meanwhile, the conductor managed to inform the police, who followed the bus and intercepted it. Noticing the cops, the students managed to escape. However, the police secured three of them.

The arrested were identified as N Dinesh (19) of Anna Nagar and J Ezhaiarasan (19) from Tiruvallur, both BCom students, and L Ganeshan (18) from Ambattur, a first-year BCA student.
