According to a CMDA official, they have sealed a building on Old Mahabalipuram Road near Semmancheri. “A departmental store was functioning in the building having ground plus three floors. The building owner had constructed it without availing a planning approval. The building is around seven years old,” the official said.

The official added that the owner was served a lock and seal notice but he failed to pull down the unauthorised structure. The building would not fall under the regularisation scheme, the official added. Officials also sealed a building on Radial Road near Pallavaram for violations. The sealed building is a new construction which has been remaining unoccupied, officials said.

It is learnt that the CMDA has sealed around 20 buildings across the city in past one month. Of the buildings sealed in recent times, majority are located in George Town area.

“Sealed buildings can be reopened after getting permission from the government. But the owners should rectify the violations within the stipulated time. We are now concentrating on such buildings that have reopened without rectifying the violations,” the official said.
