CHENNAI: Around 100 cleanliness workers from Zones 5 and 6 were detained on Monday after they attempted to siege the residence of Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran, demanding that civic sanitation work should not be privatised and that workers must be enrolled back under GCC.

The workers have been holding protests over the past few months, alleging that talks held with the government have failed to yield any agreement. On Friday, they gathered near the Commissioner’s residence to press their demands.

Police personnel deployed at the spot prevented the protest and detained the workers, citing law and order concerns.
