Chennai: Woman among three held for selling maanja thread

The injured man, Prakash Jain (67), is a resident of Korukkupettai, the police said. Based on a complaint lodged by his son, Sunil Jain, a case was registered at the Kodungaiyur police station, and an investigation was launched.

CHENNAI: Three people, including a woman, were arrested in Kodungaiyur for hoarding and selling banned maanja thread and kites in the same locality. The crackdown followed an incident in which a 67-year-old man was injured after a maanja thread struck him when he was riding on the Moolakadai flyover last week.

The injured man, Prakash Jain (67), is a resident of Korukkupettai, the police said. Based on a complaint lodged by his son, Sunil Jain, a case was registered at the Kodungaiyur police station, and an investigation was launched.


As part of the investigation into the Moolakadai flyover incident, a police team led by the Inspector of Kodungaiyur police station traced the source of the kite string and arrested three persons. The trio was identified as Sheikh Asma (38) of Muthamizh Nagar in Kodungaiyur, Ramesh Babu (53) of Kodungaiyur, and Nasruddin (34).

During the search, the police seized 35 kites and five spools of banned maanja thread. Further inquiry revealed that the accused procured the kites and kite strings from Andhra Pradesh and sold them illegally in Chennai.


They were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
