Chennai misses chance to have woman Mayor

Though Chennai was in the running for a woman to head the prestigious Corporation, a government notification has left the city out. Now the municipal corporations of Tiruchy, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore and Vellore will have women mayors.

The State Election Commission had earlier stated that Chennai would also be reserved for women. 

Meanwhile, the Tiruchy, Vellore and Tirunelveli municipal corporations which already are headed by women will continue to be ruled by the fair sex. With this the government has ensured 50 per cent reservation for women as 6 of the 12 municipal corporations in the state will be headed by women. 

However, Chennai Corporation will have more than 50 per cent reservation for women, according to official sources. Of the 200 wards in the local body, a total of 108 have been reserved for women. This includes 16 wards for SC (women) and 92 wards for women (general). SC (general) candidates will contest in 16 wards, the official notification adds. While wards 19, 21, 29, 37, 45, 46,47, 53, 57, 71,72,73, 117, 143, 157 and 188 are earmarked for SC (general) while wards 16, 17, 18, 23, 25, 31, 59, 62, 77, 85, 107, 111, 144, 159, 195 and 200 are meant for SC (women). Wards for women (general) are 13, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 22, 27, 33, 34, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 48, 49,50, 51, 52, 58, 61, 66, 67, 68, 70, 74, 76, 79, 81, 83 and 88.
