CHENNAI: The city police arrested a man for possession of illegal country-made crackers and seized over 200 crackers from his residence in Nesapakkam on Thursday.

Police probed about the crackers after a nine-year-old boy suffered injuries while playing with discarded firecrackers near the Adyar river bank on December 28.

Police said that the boy suffered burn injuries on his hands and legs and was admitted to the hospital for treatment. The child's mother, Krishnaveni, filed a complaint after which police probed and found that the discarded crackers were behind the house of Selvakumar (40), who has been stocking the crackers.

Probe revealed that Selvakumar procured firecrackers from Villupuram, stored them illegally, and sold them.

Police also found that he kept damaged and unusable firecrackers on the riverbank behind his house, which led to the child’s injuries.

The accused already had two cases against him, police said. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
