CHENNAI: Arumbakkam police recovered a bag containing Rs 34,000 in cash left behind by a collection agent of a jewellery store and returned it to its rightful owner within an hour.
According to police, Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) Karuppasamy was on duty at NSK Nagar signal junction on Sunday night, when he noticed an unclaimed bag lying on the road.
Upon inspection, he found the bag contained Rs.34,000 in cash, a purse with a bank ATM card and 40 small books related to jewellery chit scheme collections. The SSI waited for some time at the spot for the owner to return, and when no one turned up, he secured the bag and handed it over to the Arumbakkam Police Station.
Probe revealed that the bag belonged to Mohan (26), a collection agent working in the marketing section of a jewellery shop in Anna Nagar. Mohan had collected chit funds from customers on Sunday and was riding his two wheeler on his way back to the office when the bag fell on the floor.
Senior police officers appreciated SSI Karuppasamy for his prompt action.
