The Army Day is celebrated on January 15 annually to commemorate an incident in 1948 when Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from Sir Francis Butcher, who was the last British Commander.

On Monday, a wreath laying ceremony was held at the memorial in homage of all the personnel of the three Indian armed forces, who laid their lives while protecting the nation. Lieutenant General RK Anand, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area, laid the wreath at the War Memorial along with veterans during the solemn occasion. Ahead of the Army Day celebrations, several events were organised across the city to mark the occasion.

A concert by the Military Band was held at Express Avenue mall and various colleges in the city followed by a display of military equipment for public viewing.
