Aravakurichi comes under security blanket

Six companies including four paramilitary units bring Aravakurichi under a thick blanket of security in the run up to the Assembly elections scheduled on November 19. All vehicles come under the scanner to prevent flow of money or gifts into the constituency.

The six companies would be stationed at Pallapatti, KR Nagar, K-Paramathi and T-Venkitapuram in the seat. On Tuesday one company of paramilitary force arrived and they were made to stay at Kongu Kalyana Mandapam. After a roll call on Wednesday, the personnel would be deputed to various key locations.

On Tuesday, the Returning Officer and district Collector G Govindaraj inspected the polling stations and the strong room at Aravakurichi taluk office where the EVMs were stocked. The strong room was opened among tight security for the inspection of the machines.

In the evening, the Returning Officer convened an all-party meeting. He instructed the representatives regarding the expenses of telecasting of advertisements on local cable channels. The DMK members opposed it and said that all such local channels functioned without permission.

Govindaraj said that it was a regulation laid down by the Election Commission and the list of such unauthorised local cable channels would be sent to the EC for further action. Meanwhile, the Expenditure Observer Shilasheesh said that all the Omni buses and sand lorries would be checked. All the vehicles including two wheelers have to undergo vehicle check.

“We will be making all possible ways to prevent money from coming into the segment,” the Expenditure Observer stressed. The district election department has been taking efforts to prevent malpractices in the constituency which led to the annulment of the polls in the run up to the May 16 Assembly elections earlier this year.
