“Around 400 workers from Amma Canteens and 1,400 anganwadi employees will be trained in hygiene practices and also on identifying adulterants in food. Recently, the Greater Chennai Corporation has accepted our proposal regarding the training. It is being scheduled for 10 days from February 11 to February 19,” said Dr A Ramakrishnan, Designated Officer, Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department.

The training would be given free of cost, said the official, adding that the focus would be on personal hygiene. After the training, the staff would be given a certificate issued by FSSAI, said the official. As part of the demo session, the anganwadi staff have one-day training session, with six batches of 30 workers each. “We will give basic catering training and the main concepts are general hygiene manufacture (GHM) and good product manufacture (GPM). There are three levels of training: basic, advanced and special (only for manufacturers). As all these workers come under basic category, they will be given basic training,” said Ramakrishnan.

The department is planning to give training for street vendors too and have trained around 60 of them at Elliot’s beach. They are yet to schedule training for the remaining street vendors.
