500 kg gutkha seized, two held

The police seized 500 kg of gutkha and arrested two men in this connection on Tuesday. The arrested persons were identified as Rajesh (35) of Kundrathur and Puvalingam (52) of Pammal.

Pallavaram and Shankar Nagar police got a tipoff that gutkha products were being sold in petty shops in Pallavaram, Pammal and surrounding areas. Following this, they conducted a vehicle check to nab the culprits. On Tuesday evening, they intercepted Rajesh, who was carrying a carton box on his two-wheeler.

As gutkha was found inside the box, the police inquired him during which he confessed buying gutkha from one Puvalingam in Suriamman Koil Street in Pammal. On Tuesday night, the police surrounded Puvalingam’s house and seized around 500 kg of gutkha. The police said that Puvalingam used to smuggle gutkha from Karnataka. Both of them were remanded in judicial custody.
