3 teens drown in Palar river, bodies found a day later

Three teenage girls, who went swimming in Palar river, drowned Thursday evening. The bodies were recovered by Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services team on Friday morning.

The deceased were identified as A Poornima (14), a Class 8 student and a resident of Thumbavanam village in Kancheepuram, S Jayashree (15), another Class 8 student, and her younger sister S Subashree (14), a Class 7 student of the same village.

The police said the girls went to the river with a relative Damodaran. While swimming, the girls suddenly disappeared. Damodaran alerted the villagers, who jumped into the river in search of the girls. The Fire and Rescue Services team was also informed. The rescue team immediately rushed to the spot and started a search for the girls, but had to stop after nightfall. Rescue operations were resumed on Friday morning.

Bodies of Jayashree and Poornima were spotted by the villagers. Later, the rescue team recovered Subashree’s body as well.

On information, the Kancheepuram Taluk police visited the spot and sent the bodies to Kancheepuram government hospital for post-mortem examination.
