The victim, Saravanan (39) of Acharapakkam, was on night duty at the railway gate. Around 2 am, three men came on a bike and waited for a while near the closed gate. A few minutes later, they began to argue with Saravanan, asking him to open the gate. The victim found that all three had consumed liquor and said he cannot open the gate manually until the train went by.

Angered over this, the three slapped and attacked Saravanan. A police patrol team from Acharapakkam who came by the way spotted this and nabbed the trio. The police identified them as Jagadesan (28), Karunakaran (24) and Valarasu (26) from Karasanagl village in Acharapakkam. All three were handed over to the Chengalpattu railway police, who registered a case and remanded them in judicial custody.
