CHENNAI: The police arrested two men on Thursday for allegedly assaulting employees of a government-run fair price shop (ration shop) in the New Washermanpet area.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening. Ambikapathi (56), a monitoring zone officer for fair price shops in the area, was alerted about a dispute at a shop in New Washermanpet. Upon arriving at the scene, he found that two local men had forcibly entered the shop.

The accused allegedly used abusive language and engaged in a heated argument with the shop's clerk, Kalaiyarasan, and weigher, Daniel.

They accused the staff of selling ration goods in bulk illegally, and subsequently, the confrontation turned violent when the assailants reportedly attacked the two employees with a wooden chair and their hands. Kalaiyarasan and Daniel sustained bleeding injuries in the assault.

Officer Ambikapathi immediately arranged for the injured to be taken to the Stanley Government Hospital for treatment. He subsequently filed a complaint at the New Washermanpet Police Station.

The police registered a case and initiated an investigation. A team led by an Inspector from the New Washermanpet Police Station arrested Pradeepkumar (33) and Vijay (27), both residents of New Washermanpet.
