The fishermen were in two boats belonging to Sekar Pandian and Krishnan. The Sri Lankan Navy personnel surrounded them in three boats when they were fishing near Neduntheevu.

They took them to Kankesanthurai Port. The arrested fishermen were handed over to the Officials of Fisheries Department.

After the demonetisation move, the fishermen did not venture into the sea as they did not have either the new currency notes or the old Rs 100 notes to buy diesel. After they were promised that the old notes would be accepted for buying diesel till November 24 they had gone to the sea.

The incident had come as a shocker to the fellow fishermen.
