In July this year the Corporation passed a resolution and got the approval of the council for constructing 107 more canteens. Construction works started for the facilities and the officials included extended areas of the Corporation while selecting the venues for the canteens.

“Amma canteens are a boon not only for the poor people but also for all sections of people. We felt the need to increase the number of canteens. More number of poor people, who approach the government hospitals take food in these canteens located on the premises of the seven GHs,” said a corporation official. The official added that some of the canteens are constructed in interior areas, considering the needs of the public.

The canteens are providing Idli and Pongal for breakfast. Lemon, sambar and curd rice will be available for lunch. People can also have Chappati and dal during night time.

Around 1,500 workers from Self Help Groups have been picked for running these canteens.
