100 sovereigns stolen in 2 incidents

Burglars escaped with 90 sovereigns jewellery from the house of a meat shop owner in Choolaimedu in the wee hours of Friday.

The victim, S Zareena, a widow who runs a meat shop started by her late husband, had been living with her two daughters and a son on the second floor of a three-storey apartment on Second Street Sakthi Nagar.

Zareena and her children went to sleep in one of the three rooms in the house at 1 am on Friday. When they woke up, they found the cupboards in the room open and valuables stolen. Following this, Zareena lodged a complaint at the Choolaimedu police station. 

Police officials visited the spot and collected evidence. With the marriage of one of the daughters fast approaching, the theft has dealt a severe blow to the family’s plans.

In another incident, 10 sovereigns gold, silver articles and cash were burgled from a doctor’s house in Saidapet. Dr Raja was in Tiruchy along with his family when the burglary took place at his home. After returning to the city on Thursday night, he lodged a complaint at the Saidapet police station.

10 sovereigns recovered from burglar

The Valasaravakkam police arrested a burglar and seized 10 sovereigns from him. The accused, M Ramesh (40) of Sriperumbudur, targeted locked houses and carried out five burglaries in Valasaravakkam itself, said police.

Ramesh, a history-sheeter who has already detained under Goondas Act, was intercepted based on suspicion on Thursday. On September 25, Ramesh had escaped with 30 sovereigns and Rs 1 lakh from an apartment at Suresh Nagar when the resident, Jayalakshmi, a retired school principal, had gone to a temple nearby, said police.

In a similar case, 30 sovereigns and Rs 3 lakh was burgled  from a house in Kodungaiyur. Asrathaiah, a plastic products dealer, returned home from his trip on Friday, and realised that his valuables were stolen. Based on his complaint, Kodungaiyur police registered a case.
