Netflix buys streaming rights of Baahubali for Rs 25.5 cr

Popular streaming service Netflix has acquired the rights of SS Rajamouli’s war epic Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion as it works towards strengthening its presence in India. The deal is worth USD 4 million (around Rs 25.5 crore).

Speaking about the platform, Baahubali producer Shobu Yarlagadda said, “Netflix is very bullish about the India market and is here for the long term. It is looking to acquire both licensed content and make originals but won’t lap up everything. We are very happy and excited to partner with them. Theatrically, it’s not possible to reach all markets, but with this deal, Baahubali will reach 192 countries seamlessly.” 

Netflix has been signing acquisition deals of popular film titles with major production houses. It also inked content deals with Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. It has announced that it will produce three original series in India based on the novels Sacred Games, Selection Day and Again. Netflix has also expressed interest in acquiring the rights of Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film, 2.0
