As the audience entered the threatre, everyone was wondering if the duo and the film would be a runaway hit. The other thoughts on their minds were if director Elan, technically whose first release is this film, and Yuvan Shankar Raja as first-time producer, would succeed. The answer is ‘yes’. The film seems to be a breakthrough for those who have worked in it.
The story begins with Sreekumar’s (Harish Kalyan) parents (Rekha and Pandiyan) registering their son’s profile with a matrimony company. But Sree has other plans — he falls for a girl in the neighbouring company, who he sees from the window of his office and tells his friends (Muneeskanth and Deeps) of his love for her.
To his surprise, he later sees the girl in his cubicle and she introduces herself to Sree as Sindhuja (Raiza Wilson). They get along but when Sree professes his love for Sindhu, she says she isn’t ready as she has to pursue her dreams. Meanwhile, Sree insists that Sindhu marries him because of his mom’s declining health. While this makes for more than half of the film, the romantic encounters with some comical instances, work well. The majority of the second half too is about the couple trying to convince each other. While we think the lead up to the climax is bit of a drag, the end makes up for it.
The film, that was marketed as a rom-com, might not be the family audience’s cup of tea but will be looked upon as a trendsetter for the youngsters. Elan strikes a balance with his narration. However, it is the performances that lift the film to a different level. While Harish Kalyan’s performance is natural, Raiza’s performance is brilliant. They both prove they are more than just being Bigg Boss contestants and have carried themselves well as middle-class boy and a sophisticated girl.
Yuvan is a magician when it comes to composing background music and songs for a romantic film; his music is mesmerising so much so that the film might have still worked as a romantic musical sans comedy. Raja Bhattacharya’s stunning visuals too are to be applauded. The costume designers, Zafroon Yuvan for Raiza and Maheshwari for Harish Kalyan, have done a neat job and have added more colour to the film. Every character is well-etched. Overall, Pyaar Prema Kaadhal is a film that will strike a chord with the youth.
