Makeup artist paints skin to resemble person with vitiligo for an experiment

Deekshita Raja, a bridal makeup artist from Salem, recently posted a video online titled ‘Flaunt Your Flaws’, where she put on makeup to resemble a person with vitiligo. Through this initiative, she wishes to inspire individuals with this skin condition to accept themselves the way they are.

She believes it will also draw attention to the fact that most people still discriminate those with vitiligo by looking at them ‘differently’.

When asked how this idea struck her, she says, “I once saw someone with vitiligo and wondered if I would be as confident about my looks as I am now, if I had the same skin condition. We’re all so conscious about our looks because of which we make a different-looking person feel bad or ashamed of their natural self.”

The process was quite simple — Deekshita used a combination of products to create the light and dark shades and patches, but, “I did some eye and lip makeup as well, like what any normal woman might do on a daily basis,” she clarifies.

While donning this look, she went around public spaces for around three hours to observe the reaction of the people. She recalls, “It was evident that everyone looked at me like I was abnormal. There was a pronounced distinction between how people stared at me with the makeup as opposed to otherwise.”

Stating that what’s inside matters more than the exterior of a person, she recalls an incident. “A client I worked with had vitiligo and her family felt it would be better if she got it covered up. After the trial, when she looked in the mirror, she seemed confused about the ‘new’ person she was looking at, but knew this is what she would have to do to look like any other bride,” narrates Deekshita.

They showed the picture of the trial to the groom and his response blew her away — “He told me that he was in love with my client even when she didn’t have makeup on, so he would prefer to seeher the way she is,” adds the makeup artist.

Where the youngster’s fascination for makeup began traces back to her mother, who is also a beautician. After completing a course in the same from London, Deekshita came back to open her own studio. She also likes to transform herself to look like movie stars — Nayanthara is her favourite.

“Every person wants to look and feel like a celebrity, and I achieve the same through makeup. My mother helps me source the costumes and jewellery if I give her a reference image,” she sums up.
