Web series on a spiritual guru stirs up controversy, religious heads call for its ban

Tamil web series Godman, based on a controversial spiritual figure, has received flak after the release of its teaser for allegedly having strong anti-Hindu and anti-Brahminical dialogues

The upcoming Tamil web series Godman has been facing brickbats from netizens and Hindu religious associations upon the release of its teaser on Thursday. Leaked phone calls from Brahmin association leader, Ramanathan and Muslim religious leader, Vellore Ibrahim reveal that they have vehemently opposed the release of the web series.

In a leaked tape, a Brahmin’s association leader is seen telling producer Raghu Elango that the scenes that were against Hindus and Brahmins and should be immediately removed. Vellore Ibrahim in a video message said that the web series has intentionally hurt the sentiments of the Hindu religion and should be banned immediately. When DT Next contacted the director of the series Babu Yogeswaran, he said, “I completely understand the situation. However, I am not in a position to comment on this. An official word on this will be made from our side in the coming days.” Godman was scheduled to have its premiere on Zee5 on June 12. The series features Daniel Balaji, Sonia Agarwal, Jayaprakash and Tanya Desai.
