Sekhmet club roof collapse: 'Building deviations identified, it will be revealed after investigation'

CHENNAI: Following a roof collapse at Sekhmet club in Alwarpet on Thursday, the Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner J Radhakrishnan said that there are multiple departments involved in the enquiry and investigation has been taken over.

The official further added that there are various internal deviations of plan identified in the buildings, it would be revealed in the report submitted by the inquiry team.

"They have constructed a concrete false ceiling that is unusual in a building construction, which has collapsed. There are many internal deviations such as metal projections erected in the building, that has been done as part of the plan. Even though it has not fallen, these come under the building deviation. Also, within few hours of the incident the pub has been sealed by the concerned authorities," Radhakrishnan told DT Next.

It is noted that there is a legal dispute where the building has been converted into a commercial building.

"The inquiry team will carry out the investigation in an unbiased manner and reports will be revealed after a deep investigation by multiple departments. We are expecting a report which would cover all the deviations including building stability, property tax and others," added the GCC commissioner.

A senior official with GCC mentioned that already there is a legal case ongoing against the building for the last 20 years between two property owners.

However, it is not connected with any violation related issues of the building, he added.
