CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal on Monday said speed radar guns would be installed at 30 locations across the city, which will automatically issue challans if motorists exceed 40 km/hr speed during the day and 50 km/hr during the night. Though these are the designated speed limits within the city, it was not feasible for traffic cops to ensure this so far.

Inaugurating Rs 7 crore worth of equipment and systems for “traffic safety” in the city, the Commissioner said the 30 speed radar guns, now procured, will also issue automatic challans. “Programmed with the National Informatics Centre, the challans will reach violators automatically,” he added.

“Speeding by motorists is a challenge in the city. Sometimes, people indulge in stunts and many accidents occur due to speeding. We could not effectively enforce the motor vehicle rules by deploying our personnel physically,” he further noted.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said the speed limit varies from vehicle to vehicle. For instance, autorickshaws should not exceed a speed of 25 km/hr.

As an initial step, the speed guns have been installed at Anna Arivayalam junction, Dr Gurusamy Bridge, Pullah Avenue, Ration Shop Junction in Maduravoyal, Parry’s Corner junction, Injambakkam and Spencer Plaza.

Additionally, traffic police have collaborated with a private company to receive real-time traffic data at a cost of Rs 1 crore per year. The ‘Live Traffic Monitor’ will help traffic police determine traffic congestion hotspots and deploy personnel to the spot.

The system provides real-time information about current traffic conditions with the help of data purchased from Google. “This system offers 100 per cent coverage with real-time data which facilitates the study of the incoming and outgoing traffic in the city. This system does simultaneous live monitoring of 300 proposed junctions covering around 1,000 roads automatically by gathering data from the paid service of Google map,” said Shankar Jiwal.
