Of the six new judges, four — Barathidasan, MV Muralidaran, S Krishnakumar and SS Sunder — have been elevated from the Bar and two — B Gokuldas and P Kalaiyarasan — are senior district judges from subordinate judiciary.

Of the six, Gokuldas, who retired as chief judge of a court of small causes last year, is returning to service. He will be holding the post for less than two years as the retirement age of district judges is 60 and 62 in the case of high court judges.

The appointments, which comes after a gap of a year has been hailed as an welcome aspect especially when the court as on date has only 34 judges  compared to the sanctioned strength of 75 judges.

With the appointment of six judges, the number of judges will touch the 40 mark, which is still way short of the sanctioned strength. It may be noted that another list of 30 other names is said to have already been forwarded to the Supreme Court by the collegium.
