A 95-year-old is the star of this short film

Just before the lockdown in February, Krishnakumar Balasubramanian had travelled to Australia to visit his brother. During the trip, he picked up a Rode mic.

A few months later, he came across a short film contest called My Rode Reel that's organised by a company called Rode that makes microphones and high-quality production gears. "While going through the rules of the short film contest I was surprised. The only criteria they had for the contest was that at least one of the Rode products should be used for making the film. That’s when I remembered the purchase I did in February. I thought of giving it a try and wrote and directed a short film titled 'Can You Hear Me?' starring 95-year-old Supriya Cheriyan and Nirmal Shekar. We used Rode mic for the dubbing and sound effects," says Krishnakumar, the artistic director of The Little Theatre.

He finished writing the script on October 2, started shooting on October 3 and submitted the short film for the contest on October 7. "My Rode Reel is the world's largest short film competition and we are thrilled to be part of it. Supriya is my wife Rohini's grandmother and we call her Didu. Nirmal flew down to Chennai from Kochi for the shooting. Didu is a very enthusiastic person and it was quite phenomenal to work with her. She is an incredible talent - we got whatever we needed from her in different variations. Since we had limited time, we had to shoot until 1 am and Didu didn't show any discomfort. She was happy about the entire process. In 2016, she played Princess Leia in one of our Christmas pantomimes. She also did a music video in the same year," he adds.

The film that was released two days ago has been receiving a good response. "People are talking about the mood and the look of the film. The frames are very beautiful. Those who have watched the film are completely mind-blown by Didu. The film revolves around subjects like coffee, food and one-hour of sleep every day. Jerry Vincent composed the music, the cinematography was done by Shiva Darshan and the short was edited by Aravind Jagan," Krishnakumar says.
