If information trickling out of party circles are something to go by, the OPS faction might soon start a 24x7 television channel. The party has plans to name the channel after late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as ‘Amma TV’. Two senior journalists, including one who had run the show in Jaya TV could play an influential role in Amma TV. The party is said to have procured a now defunct Tamil TV channel.
A senior party source said they plan to entrust the responsibility of the channel with a businessman-cum-politician. They have earmarked a sixground site in Nungambakkam from where the channel could operate. Rumours abound in the party circles that the rebel faction could launch operations in April. A senior leader in the OPS camp said, “When even smaller parties could have a channel, why not us?”
Another source said the launch date might be delayed. Going live may not be as easy as the AIADMK rebels think. With DTH penetration in Tamil Nadu standing abysmally low, the rebels might have an uphill task to get their channel carried through the state-run Arasu Cable TV.
Should they fail to convince their estranged friends in the ruling AIADMK to carry their channel through Arasu Cable, the channel might black out even before its takes off, as it happened to MDMK’s. Currently, the channels backed by parties are DMK — Sun TV and Kalaignar TV, AIADMK — Jaya TV, DMDK — Captain TV, PMK — Makkal TV, Congress -- Mega TV and Vasanth TV, BJP — Lotus TV, VCK — Velicham TV, IJK — Vendhar TV.
