The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge posted a selection of photos, including the handmade efforts of the young royal, six, which features a yellow vase with a bunch of red flowers on the Kensington Palace Royal Instagram account, reports the Daily Mail newspaper.

Alongside a series of throwback photos which pay tribute to the couple's mothers, Carole Middleton and Princess Diana, they also shared a heartfelt message of support to those who may not be able to spend time with their loved ones amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"To mothers new and old and families spending today together and apart we are thinking of you all at this difficult time. Happy Mother's Day."

Fans from across the globe were delighted by the touching post - and thanked the royals for sharing during this difficult time.

"We need more content like this in this difficult time! thank you. sincerely yours, from Indonesian royal watcher," wrote one, while another said: "3 beautiful and very loving mothers. Happy Mother's Day to all Mums. I love Prince George's card. Super cute."

The royal couple's post comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Britons to celebrate Mother's Day remotely by using video calls as he admits the NHS was on the brink of being "overwhelmed" by the coronavirus outbreak.

The Prime Minister's warning that "the numbers are very stark and they are accelerating" came as the UK death toll soared to 233, up from 56 in a day.

The number of confirmed cases stood at 5,067.
