The accident happened at around 7 AM (local time) when the bus went up in flames near a furniture mall in Helan County’s Yinchuan city. Officials initially said 14 people were killed and 32 others injured in the Incident. The death toll was revised upwards later, after officials said a second search of the burnt bus yielded more bodies.. The site was cordoned off and the injured were receiving treatment in hospitals.

The Ningxia regional department of public security had launched a manhunt for Ma Yongping, the suspected arsonist behind the incident in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Reports coming in later said the man was arrested after he threatened to kill himself. Police had issued an alert naming him as a suspect. The bus driver too was injured.

Such arson attacks have been carried out by disgruntled persons in China in the past. In June 2013 48 people died when a man set a bus on fire and in 2014 over 30 people sustained injuries when another disgruntled man set a bus on fire.
