CHENNAI: As per a private diagnostic service provider, Medall’s data analysis from 2017 at centres across South India, shows a rise in the prevalence of obesity and diabetes.

Almost 9 lakh HbA1c tests were taken, of which almost 2 lakh BMI values show an increasing trend in the prevalence of NCDs among people aged 20-39 years of age. From 21.5 per cent in 2017, it has increased to 32 per cent in 2022.

Diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia (abnormally elevated cholesterol or fats (lipids) in the blood), are expected to increase considerably in future in the State.

Doctors say that the primary factor for increase in obesity is lack of physical activity and unhealthy food habits among young adults. Obesity causes increased levels of fatty acids and inflammation, leading to insulin resistance, which in turn can lead to type 2 diabetes.

Arjun Ananth, CEO of Medall, said, “Our data analysis show that the younger age group is also prone to NCDs due to lifestyle changes. This is alarming.”

Wellness consultant Dr Akila Ravikumar said that at least 60 per cent of cases of diabetes remain undiagnosed. “This is particularly concerning, as the risk of serious complications increases when people do not take steps to do periodic health checks, which can help them identify problems early,” she pointed out.
