Fitness Mantra: When yoga takes an offbeat avatar, everything turns upside down
It wasn’t until the late 19th-early 20th century that yoga became popular worldwide. Since then, many different forms have been developed by modern gurus, especially in the West. Here are some recently invented, whacky kinds that are becoming popular in namma Chennai.
Chennai
Yoga raves
Started by the Art of Living, these parties don’t involve alcohol or drugs but stimulation through music, yoga, meditation and vegetarian food for those looking to have a healthy night out
Anti-gravity yoga
Soft fabric hammocks are used to suspend people three-four feet in the air, to maximise movement while exercising. Yoga in the air supposedly resulting in more fulfilling stretches and stress relief
Water-based yoga
Whether on the surface (stand-up paddle yoga) or underwater (aqua yoga), exercising in a calm, still water body like a swimming pool helps improve one’s balance and connection with nature’s elements
Tantrum yoga
Become a cranky child and vent all your frustration by screaming, stomping and thrashing around like a toddler, all while doing your asanas. Sounds quite nice to exercise and not act your age while at it, right?
Dog yoga
Who knew man’s best friend could become a fitness companion too? Doga, or dog yoga, seeks the help of canines to perform certain asanas because it is believed to be cathartic and fun!
