Dancer Rukmini’s philosophy is to eat when you are hungry

Actress-Bharatanatyam dancer Rukmini Vijayakumar began dancing at the age of eight. She says that her family always insisted on fitness. “Fitness was cultivated in me from my childhood. I was into some kind of movement class — be it dance, yoga or karate. Since dance has taken over my life now, fitness has become part of my professional need,” she adds.

She loves to do pilates, stretch and a strength workout every day. Apart from this, the Kaatru Veliyidai actress does modern dance technique classes four times a week. “I practise Bharatanatyam technique class three times a week and also have dance rehearsals for about six hours. Basically, I spend all day staying fit and dancing.

I also try to do a 40-minute ballet barre every alternate day. If I am on a break from performances, I go to the gym for a couple of hours and workout on the treadmill. I use some of the weights at the gym. I also go running and cover about six miles,” notes Rukmini.

The actress believes that eating healthy is a habit. “I’m not on a diet. I don’t believe in it but I’m sure they have benefits. I like to think that if I just make the healthier choice at every meal, that’s enough for now.

I do eat other food sometimes, but over the years, vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains have become the bulk of my diet. I like paneer, yogurt and eat a lot of cheese. When it comes to food, I don’t restrict myself, it’s just because I function more effectively as a dancer if I eat the way I do. I eat healthier when I’m dancing,” she says.

Her philosophy is that eat when you are hungry. “Eat happily. Try to find the healthiest choice on the table and eat that first. Then move on to other things, if you need to. Don’t deny, yourself any chocolate or dessert. Just eat a smaller quantity, that’s about it. Get your proteins, vitamins, veggies and fruits every day,” she concludes.
