Fitness Mantra: Digital fitness enhances common workout regimes
Out of all the fitness trends that have emerged, 2018 was a year of technology, when workout routines saw a digital makeover. From wristwatches that monitor your heart rate and the number of steps you take, to virtual reality-assisted exercises, Chennaiites are liking it.

Nutrition apps
One of the most vital components of an exercise regime is to watch what you eat. Various mobile applications have been created for iOS and Android users that are easy to install and come at no cost. While some apps teach you the nutrition value of packed foods (scan the barcode via the app), others help you watch what you eat, how much water you need to drink in a day at what frequency, ideal dishes to prepare for a keto diet, etc.
Social media influencers
Celebrity bloggers who take to social media to share tips from their workout routines can be of great help. You might want to stay fit or lose/gain weight but everyone has those days when the motivation to get up and go on a run or eat healthy, fly out the window. Scrolling through the Instagram feed of your favourite fitness influencer on such occasions may actually be of help — take Shilpa Shetty or Dwayne Johnson for example.
Wearable technology
Gadgets can enhance your workout routine in the simplest of ways. Let’s say you’re going on a walk — a smart watch can help gather data such as heart rate, calories burnt, blood pressure, steps walked, time spent exercising and more. All it needs to do is stay on your wrist! Music is a great way to pump you up while exercising so getting a pair of special sweat-proof earphones, attached to a music player or your phone can work wonders.
Virtual reality at home
Remember those times when people would watch TV and follow the aerobics routine in fitness programmes? Having virtual reality attached to your treadmills or cycling machines is not really different, except here, the machine reads your vitals and suggests the proper method and amount of exercise your body requires. This personalised approach can help those who can’t hit the gym, work out at home.
