My mother has been suffering from vitiligo since she was 20. I was told that I would develop the condition as a result, and also because I am a woman. Is it true?

- Kanchana, Kodambakkam

Not all those with vitiligo have children who later develop the same condition. But if both parents have the condition, the risk is higher. Some associated autoimmune diseases like thyroid can also be present in a few cases. There are other triggers as well like drug intake, infections and trauma. Though prevalence is equal in both sexes, for women there are greater social consequences.

Are men more prone to accumulate fat around the waist than women?

- Sam Mathew, via mail

There is no such rule as such that men will accumulate more fat around the waist. Women too have fat accumulation around their pelvic region. But it can be said that amongst men the occurrence is frequent. This is due to the high level of testosterone that they secrete. Women accumulate fat in the region when oestrogen level decreases. The other common reasons for both men and women for central obesity is sedentary lifestyle and consumption of high calorie food.
