I was diagnosed as HLA B27 Positive (Ankylosing Spondylitis) a year ago. I plan to enter the Armed Forces. Will I be physically suitable for such a demanding job? Will shedding weight and maintaining it help me manage my condition? I am 6.2 ft tall and weigh 120 kg. Are there any treatment options? Vinay C, Chennai
In 98 -99 per cent of Ankylosing Spondylitis cases, the HLA B27 is positive. It is found in young men below 45 years of age, though we also see some women with the condition which is genetically mediated. It can affect mobility and can cause fusion of the joints, immobilisation of neck and back joints. One cannot do physically demanding work. It is genetically mediated and can only be managed. Now, biologic agents are part of the treatment procedure. - Dr N Thilagavathi, Consultant Rheumatologist, SIMS
I have come across several articles that suggest deep breathing for relaxation. Does it really help? What are the simple breathing exercises? N Madhu, ChennaiÂ
Breathing deeply works against onset of tension and helps combat existing tension. Sit or lie in a comfortable position and take slow, deep breaths through the nose. Fill your abdomen up with air, then let it out, like deflating a balloon. Slow exhalation helps one feel more relaxed. Combine relaxation exercises with your favourite music. Get enough sleep on a regular basis. Eat regular meals and stay hydrated. - Dr P Nagaraj, Director & Chief Consultant, PMN Pranikha Medicine Centre
